[Owasp-southafrica] Owasp-southafrica Digest, Vol 8, Issue 1

Hi,

I've been involved with OWASP for about 4 years now and am a member of a number of chapters globally, and served as Master of Ceremonies for the Taiwan Chapter's conference in '08.

Currently working at Armorize Technologies as a consultant/sales.

In my opinion the OWASP Delhi chapter has been very successful in generating an awareness of the need for understanding of Web security issues. Their mailing list is extremely active and open for everything from detailed technical questions, to case studies & tool comparisons, to general information sharing regarding upcoming trends, etc.

While I work primarily in the US and Asia, I think there is a huge need for OWASP in SA. The few opportunities I've had to work with companies in SA have shown a general lack of awareness.

With regards to canvassing for members, again, the Delhi chapter were, in my opinion, very good at getting things up & running. Their first conference back in '08 started with very low-level issues & set a good foundation for building up the population's understanding of Web security. They followed up aggressively with the mailing list, opening it up to anything the members felt was important (barring of course, commercial spamming), and this high volume of traffic led to them being able to provide a technical conference in '09 that was certainly on par with some of the best I've been to elsewhere, with about 500% increase in attendance.

A good way to start might be by contacting other chapter leaders around the world & learning from their experiences. If anyone needs any introductions I'd be happy to make them.

Best,

Jordan

Oh Yes - I think there is a great need for a OWASP South African chapter. With little information about the chapter at - hand I think there a need to resuscitate the chapter and possibly advise it through other information security forums in an effort to canvas for more members.

Hi fellow list members,

It seems that this list has been dormant for quite a while, this is an
attempt to try and resuscitate it.

If you believe that there is a place for an active OWASP chapter in South
Africa, please reply to this mail and let me know who you are. I believe
that OWASP has a positive role to play and would like to help create a
vibrant, active chapter in South Africa if anyone else is interested.

Kind regards,

We need to have an Active Chapter. I suggest we generate content (blogs,
articles, talks etc) to generate interest and keep members active. In other
words to create a compelling VALUE PROPOSITION.
I am ready to be involved to create a value proposition for members.

Hi all,

I am Rogan Dawes, and my history with OWASP goes back to the start of
the WebScarab project, when it was supposed to be an all singing, all
dancing solution, but later changed to what we have now.

I'm a security consultant, working for Corsaire in the UK, but based in
JHB. I focus on web apps mainly, but also do infrastructure work.

Rogan

Working for Corsaire, fiddling and touching and breaking and heading up the
training side of things.
Been involved with OWASP since the early days and responsible for the
Testing Guide and now looking after OWASP for Charities.

I reckon there is a big need for OWASP South Africa and indeed Africa,
considering how small the security industry is here.
