On May 3, 2016, Matt Konda informed the OWASP Community about the passing
of Paul Ritchie, OWASP's then Executive Director. Paul started at OWASP in
August of 2014 as a part-time ED with the job of "keeping the trains
running" while Sarah was out on maternity leave, but we were quickly
impressed with Paul and moved to bring him on full-time in May 2015.
Paul was known for being skilled at many things. He was an excellent
leader and an amazing listener. He wasn't afraid to call bullshit, but he
did it with a sense of diplomacy that few have mastered. He worked with
our staff to develop a plan of action and made sure that the Board was
on-board and informed of their activities. He did more than "keeping the
trains running", having Paul as our Executive Director meant that our
operations were solid, our community was heard, and our Board was versed.
After Paul passed, the Board made a conscious decision to give the
community time to grieve. We felt that rushing the search for a new ED
would be insensitive and reverted back to the "keeping the trains running"
mentality that we had when Sarah left. Matt Konda and the O&A Committee
have my utmost respect and appreciation for the time and effort that
they've put in over the past year, but we are acutely aware that we need a
full-time leader who can give the OWASP Foundation the same level of
organizational consistency and professionalism that we saw from Paul
Ritchie. It is for this purpose that I implore you, our OWASP Leaders and
Community, to help the OWASP Foundation find our Executive Director.
Here are some ways that you can help:
- We could really use community feedback to make our job posting show
how exciting it is to be a part of what we've built. The posting is
we would love to hear your feedback. Consider this a form of crowdsourcing
the document that will serve to recruit our next ED.
- Once the document is ready to go, we could really use your help to
advertise and promote this position to the furthest reaches of the globe.
We want to hire the most amazing person possible to bring our community
together, regardless of where they live or work.
- Once we've got some viable candidates, we'd like to have some
volunteers from the community to help us rate and interview them. Let me
know if you're interested in being part of this team that will ideally
consist of all of the stakeholders: Board, staff, and community.
We know that things at OWASP sometimes fall short of perfection. We're a
volunteer-driven community trying to change the world, while at the same
time holding down a day job, taking care of our families, and spreading our
time across numerous other things that we're passionate about. We've had
our fair share of setbacks, but the good news is that OWASP is still a
thriving community full of people who truly care to make a difference.
Please help the OWASP Foundation find our new illustrious leader with the
ability and desire to make OWASP the amazing place we all know it can be.
On behalf of the OWASP Board of Directors
