[Owasp-leaders] What Can I Spend My Chapter Funds On?

OWASP Leaders,

Over the years of my involvement in OWASP I have heard many Chapter leaders
asking the question "How do I know how much money my chapter has?" with the
next natural question being "What can I spend my chapter funds on?" Let's
start with the easy question first. The way that I find out how much money
my chapter has is I go to http://www.owasp.org and I search for
"Scoreboard". The first document that comes up in this search result is
the "Donation Scoreboard". It's kind of a funny name, but this page will
provide you with a link to the following Google Doc that is updated monthly
with your chapter account balance:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/1/d/11acTOmtmBGq6-5CIGsjlEByU8POSGqda0r23VNnhEGQ/pub?hl=en_US&hl=en_US&output=html

Once you know how much money your chapter can spend, you need to think of
how you want to spend it. Fortunately, OWASP likes to invest in innovation
and pretty much anything that is within the scope of our mission statement
on owasp.org is fair game. For the OWASP chapter that I call home (OWASP
Austin), this has meant:

   - Food and drinks for attendees at our monthly chapter meeting
   - Giveaways for attendees at our monthly chapter meeting
   - Recognition gifts for speakers at our monthly chapter meeting
   - Buying books for regular attendees of our weekly study group
   - Starting our own annual security conference
   - Purchasing A/V equipment to broadcast and record our monthly meetings (
   http://vimeo.com/channels/owaspaustin)
   - Hiring trainers to give free and/or reduced rate training for our
   members
   - Funding our local OWASP University chapter
   - Contributing funds back to OWASP programs that we would like to support

Now, for the Chapter Leaders who don't have significant funds in their
accounts, you have options as well. For one, you can always approach one
of the other chapters with funds and ask if they can help to sponsor your
idea. But, if that makes you feel weird, the OWASP Board has allocated
$60,000 for chapters and another $50,000 for projects in the form of
Community Engagement Funding. Since January 1, 2015, chapters have used up
less than 10% of that money. So, if you have an idea that you want to make
happen, but don't have money in the chapter account, take a look at the
rules below and make it happen!

The Chapter Leader Handbook calls out many of the things that are already
pre-approved for you to spend your funds on. For anything else, a simple
request to the staff is usually all it takes to get the ball rolling.
Remember that OWASP is YOUR organization and our chapters are vital to it's
success. I would strongly encourage you to use your funds to help OWASP
fulfill it's mission and make big things happen.

Sincerely,
Josh Sokol
