For English, see below the Afrikaans text.

Beste student

Groete.

Willem

Dear student,

The Maties Computer Club meets from time to time to chat about and
work on interesting topics in the broader discipline of computer
science. Typically, a talk or a work session deals with a topic that
we do not cover formally in our undergraduate modules.

The first activities of the year takes place this Friday, 19 February
2016, when we are visited by the company MWR InfoSecurity. At 11:00,
during the usual lecture slot for CS334 in A407 (General Engineering),
they will present a lecture about new security software they have been
developing; see below for the talk abstract. Anybody is welcome, and
it is not necessary to confirm attendance.

Then, from 17:00 onwards, a workshop on password cracking will take
place. No computer security experience is necessary. There will a
introduction, after which you will be challenged to crack as many
passwords as you can—and there are prizes up for grabs!

Again, anybody is welcome, but you have to bring your own computer as
we cannot install the required software on university computers. If
you plan on attending the workshop, please confirm your participation
by subscribing to the Maties Computer Club e-mail list (only available
on the university network). It is necessary so that we can arrange a
suitable venue.

A final word: First-years are most welcome, but please note that the
practical sessions of the Maties Computer Club are not of the same
introductory nature as first-year tutorials. Proficiency with using
Linux and basic programming skills are prerequisites.

Yours sincerely,
Willem

Talk Abstract: This talk explores a new research undertaking by MWR
that attempts to use open and dark web reconnaissance to identify
interesting information around key security topics. The techniques
used to gather information as well as some findings of the project
will be discussed. Early findings included identifying an extensive
description of a NASA breach before the breach itself was public
knowledge.
