Dear Board, Karen,
Following the AppSec Europe call last Monday where the appseceu 2018 timing
and location are not (completely) clarified yet, we want to make sure that
the upcoming 2018 OWASP summit is a success for the attendees, our
community and the foundation. As you remember, we had great results in
2017, see https://owaspsummit.org/Outcomes/.
Over the past 6 months, the summit team has put a lot of time and effort
into organising the 2018 summit. This has been an uphill challenge in many
ways. While we understand that staff support has become problematic (with
people leaving), we want to make sure to have your continued support.
While we understand you had a different position in a previous meeting, we
argue that the summit and the conference serve different purposes and
audiences. The summit is not a conference with uni-directional
presentations. Using the same model as the past summits in Portugal and the
UK, this 5-day event will be a high-energy experience, during which
attendees get the chance to work and collaborate intensively. Every
thoroughly prepared working session is geared towards a specific
application security challenge and will be focused on actionable outcomes.
The summit is very much a community event, not an appsec conference which
is geared towards a broader audience with other content (talks, trainings,
Therefor we have a couple of questions, which we hope you can respond
the board meeting on 24-Jan-2018:*
Recognize the summit as a *separate OWASP event*, indepently from the
We have a sponsor (Photobox) that initially signed the contract for the
same venue on 4-8 June 2018. We ask that the foundation takes over this
contract as main contractor and responsible for the summit. If that is not
possible - for some reason - we have other sponsors lined up to take over
the contract and its obligations.
In parallel with the administrative actions, we ask for your public support and
a statement from the OWASP board supporting the summit. This will reassure
our community that the OWASP summit is supported and will encourage our
chapter and project leaders to book their summit tickets.
The venue contract (available upon request - will forward this in a
separate email to Karen).
The current (minimal) budget which is about 65.000 GBP (or 90.000 USD).
We have to sell about 44 tickets to break even on the venue costs. This
does not take into account sponsoring by chapter, projects or external
sponsors. To put this in perspective - we sold over 100 paying tickets in
2017. (Also forwarded to Karen, together with the venue contract.)
We look forward to have the same amazing energy and outcome for the summit
and invite you to attend in person.
PS - I do not see an online board meeting agenda (nor timing), but please
add this to the agenda and let us know if we can participate?
