Tom -

I have no doubt that AppSec USA in NYC will be a fantastic experience and
the team will be great ambassadors.

Regarding new conference dates: Your team has not updated the in OCMS (which
generates the markup for the event listing wiki page) or submitted an
updated proposal to the conference committee for consideration. This is the
week before Thanksgiving as well as, more generally, in Q4, which limits
time and availability for staff in preparing for AppSec Latam during quarter
4. When the committee asked for submissions, AppSec USA was to take place in
Q3 (preferred), which your original proposal reflected.

I understand that your team has experience and put on a successful event in
2008. Our organization and model for global appsecs (especially in the US)
has changed since then. If you are looking to make this a global event and
involve the staff, please consider that we are trying to create a consistent
model and expectations on what is a "Global AppSec Event" and involve others
in the discussion of significant changes in your event.

Similar to the decision on whether to have training or not, the decision on
change of dates is larger than the local planning team. Also, I think the
change of dates should have a bit of discussion/input from others.

Assuming there is a possibility to have training the week of the 18th at the
venue (since this decision has not been made), I recommend that we discuss
the change of dates on the planning calls this week (NYC Planning team
call, and 2 conference committee calls) and ask for any feedback via the
global conference committee list.

Regards,

Sarah Baso

All, Yes just like the 2008 conference were looking forward to a fantastic
experience as ambassadors to NYC for OWASP

The venue dates have already shifted to week of Nov 18th 2013 and we will
have a full summary for Tuesdays meeting see:
http://www.meetup.com/OWASP-NYC/events/86936002/

By next week we will have determined all of the variables and if we need to
abort and circle we will do it then. As everyone knows this is NOT my first
rodeo.

Jim and myself would like to deliver our free training course.

It was a hit in Texas. Very positive for owasp and awareness.

I have to admit, I am a bit confused here. Since it appears that New York
doesn't want to do training, does that mean they want a Regional Event? The
2009 NYC event included training so what has changed.

Since I have been involved in OWASP, any major conference, now known as the
Global AppSecs, there has always been training offered.

The conference handbook says as much in terms of policy. We should manage
to policy. Decide if you are holding a global or regional event, that is,
are you doing training or not.

If not, you are either a regional event or you need to formally ask the
board for an exception to policy.

I, for one, will not support any exception on training for global AppSec
conferences. Our community has several years of expecting trainings at our
large events and I do not want to violate that established trust.

Tom et al -

My understanding from your other email (I started a new thread for
discussion on this topic) is that the NYC team who is hosting AppSec USA for
2013 is not planning for training as part of the 2013 Conference.

This is not inline with the approved NYC conference proposal, nor is inline
with the current Global Appsec Model.

As noted on the "Conference Policies" tab here:

https://www.owasp.org/index.php/Global_Conferences_Committee

One of the conference committee policies is that there must be training at
each Global AppSec:

Global AppSec Conferences must include training

As the flagship events for OWASP Global AppSec Conferences must also have a
training component.

N/A

Global AppSec Conferences

N/A

If you are requesting an exception/deviation from this policy, please let me
as well as the conferences committee & board know. Also please provide some
information on why this request is being made and this will be discussed at
the next conference committee meeting and board meeting.

Thanks,

Sarah Baso
