[Owasp-board] Hypothetical sponsorship opportunity

I also think it would be advisable if we shaped without ambiguities an OWASP
Projects Sponsorship policy.

I've made a bit of benchmarking and in my opinion this
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Project_Sponsorship model could be without much
difficulties adapted to OWASP needs.

In my perspective, on top of the model pointed out above, we should also
work on the ways to keep OWASP non-endorsement policy's integrity.

Also, I suggest we ultimately decide whether or not the policy, that we have
been pushing to set up but haven't implemented still and under which
projects leaders and contributors can't be paid for their work, is to be

My 2 cents anyway, thanks,

Totally agree with Tom here re the any company and any project...... sort of
like buying eminence.

Company ABC: " we are sponsors of OWASP projects and tools..." - what does
this mean?

OWASP projects turn into marketing vehicles for the highest bidder!!!!

This is NOT a Softtek question rather a OWASP membership/projects governance
question (also topic for next board meeting - please add it)

Based on below thread; Softtek has allocated 40% of its 2010 annual
membership cost to the OWASP 2010, Top 10 Project ?

If so.. how was that money used in this example? Do we carry a balance sheet
for each project as we do for each local chapter as to what projects have
what funds from a accouting perspective? Further does this then mean that
the project leader can utilize the funds as needed for the project?

Just want to understand the intention here prior to precedent. It would
appear that any company can BUY sponsorship (logo on page) of any project?
If so at what min., cost exactly - need clarification on intention/goal.

Sponsorship of a project can work two ways:

1. A company registers as a member and chooses that project during the
registration process. In this case, 40% of the membership fee would go
directly to support that project and initiatives.

2. A company can use the PayPal button on the project page to make a
straight donation to that project.

Softtek has already chosen to sponsor the Top 10 project with their
membership fees, so they would need to use the donate now button on the
project pages.

It had been decided that, because of the large number of projects, we would
put the donate now button on the main project page (which it is) but it can
be placed on the individual project page as well. Let me know if you would
like me to do this for these two projects.

Pravir, Carlo, Projects Committee, Board,

I've received a contact from the Business Leader for Softtek who has also
informed me that he is also in charge of the Softtek Internal Application
Security Program in which I have been asked 'where can [he] I get
information on how Softtek can become sponsors of any of those projects?'
referring to these two below:

Do you have guidance for me, please?
