Hi Martin,

>From the brief received when I was hired for this position and after
studying the Global Education Committee's page on OWASP's site, and despite
the fact that I report directly to Dinis and the Board, it was very clear to
me that the effort of thinking, and more importantly, operationalising the
concept of OWASP Academies, would absolutely need the work and input of the
GEC and I don't think it was ever an option to do it without the GEC's
involvement. I had already the opportunity to briefly mention this in the
emails exchanged with Sebastien Gioria (the GEC was copied as well as the
Leaders) and sincerely believe that the work already done by the GEC in this
area will be vital to build and define what will become an "OWASP Academy"
and in what terms will it be made a reality.

However, I also think that it is very important at this point to open the
discussion to the wider community and collect as much information and
feedback as possible, particularly from those who, in one way or the other,
are already involved with Academic institutions using OWASP projects and/or
materials to lecture courses or modules in those institutions.

I have just finished speaking with Dinis about what I think could be a good
way to dive into this project and also get things ready for the next step
that will be the working session during the Summit. I have got permission to
organize a 2 days working session here in Lisbon (in the Summit venue,
actually) to discuss the Academies. The idea would be to invite around 5/6
people internally (you, people that are already using OWASP content in their
work in European Universities and that have shown interest in participating
in this discussion, Dinis) and key members of some of the Universities with
whom OWASP has already some connection in Europe. What do you think?

I will send the invitations with a proposal for the date and the remaining
details in the next couple of days. We were thinking of doing this in the
beginning of January - is this feasible for you?

With regard to the GEC Meeting - sure, I would love to join and Wednesday at
9pm would be fine for me. My skype ID is sandrapaiva2 (Lisbon).

Will you, please, confirm the meeting and let me know about the dialing
details?

Many thanks!

Sandra

Hi Sandra,

We, as the Global Education Committee, had some work on the area you are
addressing.

Maybe we started on the wrong foot, as I hoped for more joint effort between
you and the GEC (and the education project), but I most definitely embrace
your ideas and the passion!

The GEC does meet online via skype every 14 days on Wednesday, from 10pm CET
on. In Portugal, this should be 9pm.

Can we schedule an extra meeting this week Wednesday? I haven't been online
last week Wednesday due to the OWASP Germany Conference. Would be great to
meet and introduce ourself to Sandra and vice versa to ensure a good working
together?

@Sandra, can you share your skype details with me? My skype ID is
knoblochmartin (Netherland).

Cheers,

Martin

Dear all,

I have been asked by the OWASP Board to start off the process of designing
and building a new concept that will be closely linked to the training
activities promoted by OWASP and that intends to take this area one step
further.

The idea is to create what we will call OWASP Academies -
http://www.owasp.org/index.php/OWASP_Academies.

The OWASP Academies will be a frame under which work should be done with
Universities, Polytechnic Institutes, IT Schools and other Academic
institutions with a view to establish solid relationships and develop with
these organisms ways to collaborate and participate in the design of courses
focused on web application security.

OWASP has the knowledge and critical mass to give an invaluable input to any
Academy focusing on this area - both by contributing with its expertise in
the definition of curricula and course contents that explore and study the
web security field and by making available to the Academy its pool of
interested and willing security experts as trainers.

As mentioned above, this concept is just at its beginning and we do not
have, as of yet, a clear methodology or set of rules to implement what
hopefully will be a new area of work for OWASP. What is clear, however, is
that to make this happen we will need your input and ideas, your energy and
your initiative. Moreover, as we are planning to include this discussion in
one of the Working Sessions to be held in the upcoming OWASP Summit 2011,
this would be the perfect timing to gather your input and contributions.

Being so, if you have contacts within your local academic communities and
would like to be involved in the design and development of this concept,
please do get back to me with your thoughts!

I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Regards,

Sandra
