Group, we should include Marco’s suggestions into an appendix for the chapter handbook

Lee

Nice to know you are thinking to establish the chapter in Pittsburgh. I started the chapter in Cincinnati in 2008 . One advice I would like to give you, the most critical points are:

1) to establish a community of followers for the meetings

2) establish a good location for meetings

3) attract good speakers and select presentations relevant to the audience

4) raise funds for your local chapter to pay for lunch through membership and sponsorship

For 1) you can start with a mailing list and an event to introduce OWASP to new people. I suggest to recruit from your workplace and academic community as well as by advertising on local LinkedIn security groups

For 2) I suggest to ask your employer or local university if supports a location. You might want to reach any academic that covers security courses at your local universities in your area

For 3) you can start with local security consultants willing to have their name out, you can also try to reach OWASP on the move for nearby speakers. If you need, I will be happy to came to talk to your chapter assuming does not conflict with my calendar etc

For 4) I would encourage OWASP membership from the first meeting, also reach out security companies to sponsor lunch at the meeting with a donation and keep some funds left for other activities

Our chapter web page can give you a little history of our presentations.

Let me know if you need any help, feel free also to reach me on Skype at marco.m.morana

Best Regards and Good Luck

Ken is the chapter leader for the Cleveland, Ohio chapter, Marco is the leader for the Cincinnati chapter, and Andrea is the chapter leader for the Rochester, NY chapter. I believe that they are the three chapters which are geographically closest to you.

Ken, Marco, and Andrea, Lee has expressed an interested in restarting the defunct chapter in Pittsburgh, PA and is hoping to get some advice/pointers from guys who have - been there…done that.

I would appreciate it if any of you three could reach out to him and give him a hand getting started.

Thank you for your efforts!

BTW, I don’t think I have headshots for any of you for our volunteer page. You know, this IS national volunteer week. Please forward your photos and I’ll get them posted. https://www.owasp.org/index.php/OWASP_Volunteers

Some chapters meet in company board rooms, others in public libraries, others need bigger spaces like a university lecture hall, and others (mostly our chapter is EU J) meet at a local pub. It really will depend on if you find a sponsor or a university who might be willing to donate the space.
