I would describe it more of an avatar than an alias ;-)

Hmm... Mark, I just noticed that one of your e-mail aliases is
"javaguru at ...... ", so feel free to glide over my explanation of JSR168 :-)

Interesting question..

JSR168 is a Java Specification that can only be implemented on a J2EE Portal
Server. i.e. The UI/Portlet has to be written in Java as the Portlet
specification is based on the Servlet specification. You can theoretically
move a JSR168 compliant portlet across the various J2EE portal
implementation that are JSR168 compliant.. In practice there are still some
hiccups that occur but this is certainly a viable option in that space.

A more cross-platform solution is WSRP (Web Services for Remote Portlets)
http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/tc_home.php?wg_abbrev=wsrp

This is in essence a standard for an interactive, presentation oriented web
service.. What this allows you to do is that if a portal supports the WSRP
spec, it can aggregate the presentation from multiple WSRP services. This
is not in any way tied to a language or a platform as the WSRP output is a
web service. Products that support this spec are currently available from:
# Apache Foundation (WSRP4J project)
# BEA
# eXo (an open source portal)
# Fujitsu
# Gluecode
# IBM
# Intrafinity
# Microsoft
# NetUnity
# Oracle
# Plumtree
# Sun
# uPortal (an open source portal)
# Vignette
# webMethods

As you can see, this is pretty much all of the major players in this space..
Yes, it may be surprising to some, but Sharepoint can actually produce a
WSRP compliant web service and has a Web Part that can act as the consumer
of a WSRP compliant web service, whether that web service is produced by MS
or non-MS products..

Regards,

- Anil

Very clear, thanks. Have any adopted (or moved towards) standards like
http://www.jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=168 ?

I personally not aware if anyone has done a direct comparison of DotNetNuke
with Sharepoint and a quick Google search did not get any hits. But what you
are in essence comparing are the Modules feature
http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Default.aspx?tabid=179 of DotNetNuke with the
webpart feature
http://www.microsoft.com/sharepoint/server/downloads/webparts/introduction.a
sp of Sharepoint.

Both are built on the .NET Framework but one of things I like about Webparts
is that, at the most basic level they are standard ASP.NET custom controls
and Microsoft has provided custom templates that plug into VS.NET which
allow you to build them in the VS.NET Environment.

OK thanks. Good to know. Thanks.

Can you point to a simple comparison of the container features of DNN vs
SharePoint PS ?

It's not out yet..

Telligent systems is the company that was started by Rob Howard, who was
formerly a member of the ASP.NET team and the lead on the development of the
ASP.NET Forums.. (http://www.asp.net/forums/ ) The community server is a
combination of the code base of the next generation of the ASP.NET Forums
software, the .TEXT blog engine and the nGallery Image Display engine (He
basically hired the developers of .TEXT and nGallery) plus some custom
enhancements... The key thing to keep in mind is that they are not building
a portal solution, but instead look to portal technologies such as
DotNetNuke or Microsoft Sharepoint as the container for Community Server.

What is out there, and can download, is the version 2.0 of the Forums
software, which they are calling the Community Server: Forums. The other two
pieces are still the existing .TEXT software and the nGallery engine.. The
integration of the three pieces is simply not available as of yet..
