  As far as I know there are no variables of any kind in the Templates --
there was a plan to add meta-variables of kind, but I'm not aware of this
plan ever being carried out.
  However, templates support extension mechanism, which allows adding new
tags, with custom interpretations. This plus the ability to customize the
interpretation of those tags on their (XML) children tags, gives almost
unlimited possibilities. It's also not quite true they are not used --
opalang.org is completely build using templates :).
