[Global_conference_committee] FW: Endorsement Invitation to OWASP Malaysia:4th Annual SecurAsia, 20-21 September '10, KL

In general, OWASP doesn't endorse commercial events because our brand always
gets abused. Unless we have a significant involvement in the event, like a
track or something.

Group, just last week we were discussing the absence of OWASP activity in
the APAC region! Mohd, the chapter leader for Malaysia has received an
invitation to assist with promotion of a conference in Asia this September.
He has received a "contract" for endorsement for the upcoming event.

Please take a minute to review this document, especially the 3 points that
would be required of OWASP. I would like the group to consider this event.
I have already asked if there might be a possibility of a speaker spot or a
booth.

Hi Kate & Cecil,

Thank all for the reply, I already get their invitation on what they want.
Like they need us to endorsement some of their events that will held in
Malaysia. They need OWASP Malaysia name to be one of their Annual Asia
SecurAsia 2010. What do you think guy. They give something in the return we
give something back like win win situation. I attach with their letter to
me. So need your advice again.

Cecil, thanks for looping me in on this request. Just last week, the
conferences committee was discussing who to contact in the APAC region. It
seems that OWASP activity has not been globally promoted in this area, and
we would like to change this!

It seems to me that this invitation is to attend this event as an
individual. If I am incorrect, and this would be to participate as a
speaker and/or have a booth at the event, then OWASP would be interested in
participating. We are, after all, driven by our mission: to make
application security visible.

Mohd, if you would like to find out what they would be asking us to do,
please go ahead. We can discuss participation once we understand what is
needed.

Many thanks,

Dear Fazli,

Usually when I get these types of invitations, they are paid conferences or
seminars catering to a smaller audience/crowd. Their targets and aim are
more for business types of audience than techies.

I had spoken before on the Asian Business Finance (ABF) seminars and I
believe this should be quite similar.

However, I do not think you will get paid, but you may get one or two free
tickets for your speaking slot (ie., for other OWASP members) to attend for
free.

If you do this, it may raise awareness for the local community that there is
such an avenue for Open-ness of Web Application Security. But I doubt you
would get paid (unless it's a workshop or a 2-day seminar that you would be
handling solo).

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,
/cecil

technologies: cloud computing, virtualisation and mobile security with a
variety of case studies by organisations and syndicate exercises aims to
equip delegates with simple, proven strategies to better plan, manage and
protect corporate data. Delegates attending the event can learn to put into
practice new found ideas on the latest IT security methods and technologies,
mobile security and on information security management system. This event
will be a good platform for OWASP Malaysia to promote in the field of
software security and to discuss development and implementation of
programmes relating to various spheres of IT security. As part of
endorsement, we would be happy to distribute marketing collaterals and
membership forms and disseminate information on behalf of OWASP Malaysia and
acknowledgement logo in our marketing campaigns to build corporate image and

We would appreciate if you could give us an indication on whether OWASP
Malaysia would be interested in supporting this event by June 18. Please do
not hesitate to contact me should you need to discuss further in regards to
this matter. If you are unable to accept this invitation, we would very much
appreciate it if you could direct us to any other person(s) in your
organisation or from the industry who may be able to. Kindly advise so that
we can take this forward or we can at least have your feedback on this
matter. We would appreciate your reply one way or another as soon as
possible.
